BigCommerce Product Page Optimization

August 21, 20264 min readBy Zyenta

The product page is the most important page on your BigCommerce store. It is where intent becomes a decision, and on a platform often chosen for larger catalogs, it is also where clarity matters most. BigCommerce gives you a strong set of native tools to build a converting product page; the work is using them well. This guide covers the elements that actually move the number.

This is one execution piece of our BigCommerce conversion rate optimization guide. If you optimize one page on your store, make it this one.

Lean on native features, do not bury them

BigCommerce includes a lot natively, product options, reviews, and more, so you rarely need to bolt on apps to build a strong product page. The most common mistake is adding apps and scripts for things the platform already does, which slows the page for no benefit. Start from what BigCommerce gives you and configure it well.

1. Keep it fast

Speed comes first, because a slow product page loses people before they see your images. BigCommerce gives you a fast hosted foundation, so protect it: compress and correctly size every image, lazy-load below the fold, and resist installing apps for features the platform already offers. On mobile especially, speed is conversion.

2. Lead with strong images and video

Images do the selling that copy cannot. Show the product from every angle a customer would want, in context and in use, not only on a white background, and include a shot that conveys scale. Use the gallery fully and add a short video where it helps, since video answers questions static images cannot. Make sure the gallery works smoothly on mobile without a broken zoom.

3. Surface reviews near the top

Social proof placed close to the decision does more work than reviews buried at the bottom. BigCommerce supports product reviews natively, and integrates with dedicated review tools if you want more. Collect reviews systematically with a post-purchase email a week or two after delivery, show the star rating high on the page near the title, and keep the honest imperfect reviews, since a wall of flawless five stars reads as fake.

4. Make the add-to-cart button obvious

The add-to-cart button is the most important element on the page. It should stand out in color and size, use clear language, and stay reachable as the shopper scrolls, especially on mobile, where keeping the action one tap away matters most. Do not let theme styling leave it blending into the page.

5. Make product options effortless

BigCommerce is strong on product options and variants, which is a real advantage for stores with complex catalogs, and also a place to get the experience right. Show options as visible, tappable swatches or buttons rather than long dropdowns, indicate what is in stock, and keep any size or spec guide one easy tap away. Confusion at the option step is a quiet but common conversion killer.

6. Write copy that sells

Lead with the benefit, not the specification. Keep the copy scannable with short paragraphs and bullets, and answer the single biggest objection, fit, price, durability, compatibility, directly on the page. If you sell products other stores also carry, write your own description rather than keeping the manufacturer's default, since duplicate copy is weak for both shoppers and search. Removing the top hesitation often moves conversion more than any design tweak.

7. Help shoppers find the right product

Because BigCommerce often powers larger catalogs, getting shoppers to the right product quickly is a bigger lever here than on a small store. Use the native faceted search and filtering well, keep categories clear, and make sure related and recommended products on the page are genuinely relevant. A shopper who lands on the wrong product, or cannot find the right one, converts at zero.

8. Answer shipping and returns on the page

Tell shoppers what shipping costs and when it will arrive, and state your return policy plainly, right on the product page, before they reach the cart. Surprise shipping costs are the top reason people abandon later, so setting the expectation early both builds trust and prevents abandonment downstream.

What to measure

Watch add-to-cart rate as the primary signal that the product page is doing its job, split by device so you can see whether mobile is lagging. Then follow it through to purchase, because a page that lifts add-to-cart but not sales may be sending people into a checkout that needs its own work, covered in reduce BigCommerce cart abandonment. When you have the traffic, prove bigger changes with a controlled test, and see our benchmarks for where your numbers should land.

Use what the platform gives you

The product page is where the decision is made, and BigCommerce hands you strong native tools to get it right. Keep it fast, lead with strong images, surface reviews, make the buy button and product options obvious, and help shoppers find the right product quickly.
