BigCommerce Conversion Rate Optimization
BigCommerce sits between the two extremes of ecommerce platforms. Like Shopify, it is hosted, fast, and secure without you managing servers. Unlike Shopify, it ships with a deep set of native features built in, so you lean on fewer apps to get the same capability. That combination shapes how you optimize a BigCommerce store: you have strong tools out of the box, and your job is to use them well rather than bolt on more.
For the platform-neutral foundation, start with our ecommerce conversion rate optimization guide. This post is about what is specific to BigCommerce.
What is different about optimizing BigCommerce
Three things about BigCommerce shape your CRO strategy.
First, a lot is built in. BigCommerce includes features natively that on other platforms require apps: faceted search, multiple product options, and more. That means less app bloat and fewer scripts slowing your store, if you resist adding apps for things the platform already does.
Second, the checkout is hosted but flexible. BigCommerce provides a fast, optimized one-page checkout out of the box, and gives you meaningful control over how it looks and behaves. You cannot rewrite it from scratch the way you can on WooCommerce, but you have more room than on standard Shopify.
Third, it scales toward larger and B2B stores. BigCommerce is often chosen by bigger catalogs and businesses that sell both retail and wholesale. That can mean more complex navigation and more product options to get right, which makes on-site clarity especially important.
The order of operations that works
Fix leaks in order of how much money they cost. On most BigCommerce stores, that order looks like this.
1. Keep the store fast by not over-adding apps
BigCommerce gives you a fast hosted foundation, so the most common way to ruin it is to pile on apps and scripts for features the platform already offers natively. Before installing anything, check whether BigCommerce already does the job. Compress and correctly size your images, since they are still the biggest weight on any store, and keep third-party scripts lean. Your speed advantage on BigCommerce is real, but only if you protect it.
2. Optimize the product page
The product page is where the decision is made, and on a larger BigCommerce catalog it is also where clarity matters most. The essentials are universal: multiple strong images and video, reviews visible near the top, a clear high-contrast add-to-cart button, shipping and returns answered on the page, and benefit-led copy that handles the biggest objection. If your products have many options or variants, make selecting them effortless with visible swatches and buttons rather than long dropdowns, and keep any size or spec guide one tap away. If you optimize one page, make it this one, and our BigCommerce product page optimization guide goes element by element.
3. Use the one-page checkout well
BigCommerce's optimized one-page checkout is already a strength, because fewer steps mean less drop-off. Your job is to make sure nothing undermines it:
- Remove the shipping surprise before checkout. Show shipping cost or a free-shipping threshold in the cart, since surprise costs are the top reason people abandon.
- Enable guest checkout so no one is forced to create an account to buy.
- Turn on express and digital wallet payments so returning shoppers pay in a couple of taps.
- Keep the checkout fields minimal and make sure mobile inputs behave.
Around 70% of carts are abandoned, and much of that is fixable friction around a checkout that BigCommerce already made fast. See our BigCommerce checkout optimization and reduce BigCommerce cart abandonment guides for the full playbooks.
4. Get navigation and search right
Because BigCommerce often powers larger catalogs, helping shoppers find the right product quickly is a bigger lever here than on a small store. Use the native faceted search and filtering well, keep categories clear, and make sure the path from landing to the right product is short. A shopper who cannot find what they want converts at zero.
5. Do not neglect mobile
Mobile is most of your traffic and converts at roughly half the desktop rate. Make sure the mobile experience is fast, the buy button is thumb-reachable, product options are easy to tap, and the one-page checkout is not a typing ordeal. The mobile gap is usually the biggest single opportunity in the store.
6. Recover abandoned carts and prove your changes
BigCommerce includes built-in abandoned-cart tools, so use them: a timely email to the high-intent people who leave recovers a real slice of lost revenue. Our BigCommerce abandoned cart recovery guide covers the flow. Then, once the obvious fixes are in, prove your bigger changes with testing. On stores with enough traffic, A/B testing tells you whether a change actually caused a lift; on lower-traffic stores, use disciplined before-and-after comparisons. Change one thing, measure against a clean baseline, keep only what proves itself.
BigCommerce-specific traps
- Adding apps for native features. Installing apps for things BigCommerce already does natively adds weight and cost for no benefit. Check the platform first.
- Underusing the built-in tools. Faceted search, abandoned-cart recovery, and product options are already there. Not configuring them well leaves value on the table.
- Letting a large catalog get confusing. More products means more chances for shoppers to get lost. Invest in navigation and search.
- Treating mobile as secondary, when it is where most of your customers actually shop.
How to measure whether it is working
Set a baseline, then watch conversion rate split by device, add-to-cart rate, cart-to-checkout and checkout-to-purchase rates, and revenue per visitor. Give changes time to gather data and compare against a clean baseline rather than a single day. For where your numbers should land by category, see our ecommerce conversion rate benchmarks.
Use the tools you already have
BigCommerce gives you a fast foundation and a deep set of native features, so optimizing it is less about adding and more about using what is there well. Protect your speed by not over-adding apps, make the product page and navigation clear, and get the most out of the one-page checkout and built-in recovery tools. The underlying principles are the same across every platform, and many overlap with our most-developed guide, Shopify conversion rate optimization.
